Urban BioRoof research project

Aims and goals of Urban BioRoof research project

Cooperation for R&D on screening and formulation of substrates and plants for green roofs - urban-bioroof-logo

This proposal investigates the use of green roofs as urban elevated biofilters to improve environmental conditions mainly by reducing particle pollution. The Consortium comprises of: a. LAVA which possesses the only pumice quarry worldwide of excellent quality that is an ideal constituent for substrates and b. LANDCO and China’s TOPGREEN, both leading firms in green roof construction. Furthermore LANDCO represents DIADEM green roof systems. The Consortium is completed by the participation of Laboratory of Floriculture & Landscape Architecture of Agricultural University of Athens and Beijing Forestry University, both with excellent and established experience in the field of green roofs, substrates, use of native plant species, environmental pollution, etc.

The main objectives include:
a.    investigation of using low carbon footprint local materials as constituents for green roof substrates contributing to capture and reduce leachate pollutant loads,
b.    selection of suitable native plant species for the development of sustainable plant communities on green roofs with ecological benefits that would contribute to the capture of pollutants,
c.    development of a pilot/case study green roof to apply and validate the above findings,
d.    software development that will predict pollutant capture by various green roof types.
Deliverables include: three patents (substrates, native plant species communities, software), the award of PhD dissertations and MSc theses and publications in international scientific journals and conference proceedings.

Participating companies are anticipated to gain significant advantage in their markets by exchange of new expertise and produce of new products. Multiple benefits are anticipated for National economy of both countries by the development of new job positions and green technology. A significant improvement of the urban environment is also anticipated. Results will be publicised through website, daily press, technical magazines and a conference open to the publicp
