Στην περίφημη Vers une architecture του 1923 του Le Corbusier που αναφέρονται τρεις από τις πέντε αρχές της νέας θεωρίας της αρχιτεκτονικής, που ήταν να γίνουν οι θεμελιώδεις αρχές της σύγχρονου Μοντέρνου Κινήματος. Με το στόχο, αποκατάστασης της πρόσβασης της ανθρωπότητας στο πράσινο, το roof garden του ξενοδοχείου ήταν ένας από τους αυτές οι αρχές, μαζί με την πυλωτή , την ανοιχτή, ελεύθερη πρόσοψη και το παράθυρο ταινία.

Σε απόσταση σχεδόν ενός αιώνα, τα μεγάλα δώματα της Νέας Υόρκης είναι αρκετά διαφορετικά από κατασκευές του μανιφέστου - όπως το Ville Savoye. Δύο γνωστά παραδείγματα στεγών στη Νέα Υόρκη δεν είναι απλώς να μετατρέπονται σε καλλιεργούμενες εκτάσεις, αλλά και να είναι σημεία αναφοράς για τις κοινότητες των αγροτών και των καταναλωτών της πόλης του μηδενικού κόστους μιλίων παραγωγή τροφίμων και βιολογικών προϊόντων είναι Μπρούκλιν Grange Farm, κατασκευάστηκε από την Bromley Caldari (Αρχιτέκτονες) το 2010 στην κορυφή ενός παλιού βιομηχανικού κτιρίου στο Queens, και το Eagle Street Rooftop Farm που στην οροφή από ένα υπόστεγο στο Μπρούκλιν, που σχεδιάστηκε από το στούντιο Goode πράσινο.

Ιn his celebrated volume Vers une architecture of 1923 Le Corbusier listed three of the five principles of a new theory of architecture that were to become the fundamental tenets of the Modern Movement.With the aim of restoring humanity’s access to greenery the roof garden was one of these principles, along with the pilotis or pile, the open plan, the free façade and the strip window.

At a distance of almost a century, the great industrial sheds of New York are quite different from such manifesto-constructions as the Ville Savoye, but the desire of city dwellers to climb onto roofs and colonize these large horizontal and unused surfaces with layers of cultivated soil may not be so remote from the intention to make the roofs of houses functional by which the ambitious architectural theories of the modernists set so much store. Two well-known examples of roofs in New York converted not just into cultivated areas, but also into points of reference for the communities of city farmers and consumers of zero-food-mile organic produce are Brooklyn Grange Farm, constructed by the Bromley Caldari Architects firm in 2010 on top of an old industrial building in Queens, and Eagle Street Rooftop Farm set on the roof of a shed in Brooklyn, designed by the Goode Green studio

Nel celebre volume Vers une architecture del 1923 Le Corbusier elenca tre dei cinque principi di una nuova teoria dell’architettura che diventeranno i punti fondamentali del Movimento Moderno. Con la finalità di restituire il verde all’uomo il tetto giardino è uno dei punti accanto ai pilotis, alla pianta libera, alla facciata libera e alle finestre a nastro.

A quasi un secolo di distanza i grandi capannoni industriali di New York sono altro rispetto alle costruzioni-manifesto come la Ville Savoye, ma la volontà dei cittadini di salire sui tetti e di colonizzare queste ampie superfici orizzontali inutilizzate con strati di terra coltivata non è forse lontana da quella volontà di rendere funzionali le coperture delle abitazioni, tanto auspicata dalle ambiziose teorie architettoniche moderniste.

Due celebri esempi a New York di tetti convertiti non solo in superfici coltivate, ma anche in punti di riferimento per le comunità di cittadini-agricoltori e consumatori di prodotti biologici a km zero sono il Brooklyn Grange Farm costruito dallo studio Bromley Caldari Architects nel 2010 a Queens su un vecchio edificio industriale e Eagle Street Rooftop Farm posto sul tetto di un capannone a Brooklyn, progettato dallo studio Goode Green.
